  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

In four concerts and four rare historical locations, Raphaël Pichon and the Pygmalion ensemble follow the stages of the biography of Johann Sebastian Bach in Thuringia, a region in central Germany and the cradle of the Bach family.

    I. Welt, Gute Nacht

The main church of Arnstadt, where Heinrich Bach, the great-uncle of Johann Sebastian, was organist for half a century (from 1641 to 1692), the Oberkirche is a building without a transept with richly decorated wooden galleries and a flamboyant altarpiece… Today, the church, although it has not been deconsecrated, only hosts rare services.

Sabine Devieilhe, Maïlys de Villoutreys, Perrine Devillers, Lucile Richardot, Paul-Antoine Benos-Djian, Laurence Kilsby, Antonin Rondepierre, Tomáš Král, Christian Immler et Renaud Brès.

    Programme :

Daniel Speer – Ach wie elend ist unser Zeit
Adam Drese – Nun ist alles überwunden
Dietrich Buxtehude – Jesu mein Lebens Leben BuxW 62
Johann Michael Bach – Sinfonia « Auf, lasst uns den Herren loben »
Philipp Erlebach – Himmel, du weißt meine Plagen
Melchior Franck – Ich bin so müd vom Seuffzen
Johann Christoph Bach – Ach, dass ich Wassers gnug hätte
Johann Christoph Bach – Fürchte dich nicht
    Nicolaus Bruhns – De profundis
Jean-Sébastien Bach – Nach dir Herr verlanget mich BWV 150

    II. Wedding Cantata

For their second concert in the footsteps of Johann Sebastian Bach, the Pygmalion Choir and Orchestra invite us to discover St. Bartholomäus Church in Dornheim. It is in this charming setting – where Bach married in 1707 – that an excerpt from the Wedding Cantata BWV 202 unfolds, performed here by soprano Sabine Devieilhe.

    Program:
Johann Sebastian Bach – Aria 1 from the cantata “Weichet nur betrübte Schatten” BWV 202

Filmed in May 2024 in Dornheim.

    III. Actus Tragicus

Sixty kilometers north of Arnstadt, here is Weissensee and its surprising St. Peter & Paul church. It is said that Bach stayed there at the request of the organist to fine-tune the great organ.

In this setting with side galleries decorated with flamboyant paintings, Pygmalion spatializes without an audience a choral work by Johann Michael Bach (in the genealogy he is the “big cousin of Bach” – son of Heinrich Bach and Eva Hoffmann), and excerpts from the cantata Actus Tragicus, whose writing is very inspired by ancient forms.

With Sabine Devieilhe, Maïlys de Villoutreys, Lucile Richardot, Zachary Wilder, Tomáš Král and Christian Immler.

    Program:
Johann Michael Bach – Unser Leben ist siebenzig Jahre
Johann Sebastian Bach – Cantata Actus Tragicus BWV 106 (excerpts)

Filmed on May 15, 2024 in Weißensee.

    IV. Missae Breves
Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion perform the Short Masses, the repertoire of their first recording, 20 years ago… A double return to the roots with the repertoire at the origin of the Pygmalion ensemble in the very place where it all began for Bach.

With Maïlys de Villoutreys, Lucile Richardot, Zachary Wilder, Tomáš Král, Christian Immler on vocals and Matthieu Boutineau on organ.

    Programme :
Jean-Sébastien Bach – Der Gerechte kömmt um BWV 1149
Jean-Sébastien Bach – Messe brève en sol mineur BWV 235
Jean-Sébastien Bach – O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht BWV 118 (pour orgue seul)
Jean-Sébastien Bach – Alle Menschen müssen sterben BWV 1117 (pour orgue seul)
Jean-Sébastien Bach – Messe brève en fa majeur BWV 233

Filmed on May 17, 2024 in Arnstadt
