ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Bandits looking for a new coup, a Spanish delegation, a large pot of money, a not-so-honest cashier, and police officers who are always late: the ingredients, disguises, and twists of Offenbach’s comic opera, created in 1869 at the Théâtre des Variétés, are so numerous that they make the story unbelievable.
With a lively libretto by Meilhac and Halévy, the author of “Hélène Belle” delivers a little gem of humor while simultaneously poking fun at the financial circles of the Second Empire.
For over thirty years, Les Brigands were absent from the Paris National Opera, but in Barrie Kosky’s new production, they now take the Palais Garnier by storm for the first time. This great lover of Offenbach’s music, who sees a affinity with Dadaism in this offbeat comedy, recreates the rhythm and madness of a joyfully amoral society.
