ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Adventures of King Pausole ( H. 76 )by Arthur Honegger is an operetta composed in 1929-1930 . Its libretto, taken from the novel by Pierre Louÿs of 1901 , was written by Albert Willemetz , the German version by Hans Zimmermann . Its premiere took place on December 12, 1930 at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens and was a success. The operetta was performed more than 500 times.
Although Arthur Honegger ‘s reputation is based on symphonic music and oratorio , the composer also wrote three operettas in the 1930s. The other two, La Belle de Moudon of 1931, Les Petites Cardinal of 1938, were more successful in the French-speaking world than in German-speaking countries. Les Aventures du Roi Pausole is now rarely performed.
In 1933 the play was filmed under the title The Adventures of King Pausole , directed by Alexis Granowsky with Emil Jannings and Josette Day .
Summary
Once upon a time there was a charming country that no map indicates and that was called Tryphemus. The country had a sovereign, King Pausole, and the sovereign had 365 queens and a daughter (born perhaps in a leap year), the white Aline. The clemency of the sky, that of the king and the whimsy of the author authorized the absence of morals as well as that of clothing.
Each queen becomes the “Queen for a Day” for a year, so that the king is amply supplied with amorous joy, even if the ladies themselves are not particularly happy about it. Diana, one of the women in the harem, strives in vain to become the “queen” and to be with him.
Only Princess Aline knew the rigors of good education. Bored at home, she runs away one day with a foreign dancer whose troubling disguise (Mirabelle, the disguised dancer) offers enough charms for her young aspirations. Here is the court of Pausole upset!
The king, the minister Taxis and the young page Giglio, whose arguments, if we may say so, penetrating and reiterated are proof at once of a clear morality and a fine constitution, set out in pursuit of the two fugitives. Thus begins the Adventures of King Pausole.
