The opera “The Legend of the City of Yelets, the Virgin Mary and Tamerlane”The opera tells the legend of the events of 1395, when Tamerlane marched with his army towards Moscow but was forced to halt near Yelets. The townspeople prayed for salvation before the miraculous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, and that night the fearsome warrior had a dream in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him. Frightened by the vision, Tamerlane turned his army back.
The libretto, written by Nikolai Karasik from Lipetsk and the Moscow writer Radomira Polzunova, interweaves events from the 14th century, 1941 (when the conqueror’s tomb was opened), and the present day.
Tchaikovsky composed the opera on commission from the Administration of the Lipetsk Region in just three weeks. The premiere took place in 2011 in the natural surroundings of the city of Yelets — the very place where the historical events of the late Middle Ages unfolded. In the Zaryadye Hall, the opera will be performed in a semi‑staged version.
