ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Quote BR-Klassik:
It was possibly the greatest operatic success in the last 50 years in terms of world premieres. Aribert Reimann was hailed for his “Lear” in the Munich National Theater on July 9, 1978, and many artistic directors across the country then showed interest in the play. Despite the large orchestra with huge percussion, despite immense demands on the singers, despite a disillusioning subject that even Giuseppe Verdi shied away from. Shakespeare’s tragedy shows the “isolation of man in total loneliness, exposed to the brutality and dubiousness of life”, as Aribert Reimann put it. The opera is divided into two parts, and one of the eleven scenes, the threatening storm scene, is of particular importance. The first new production of the piece in Munich after 43 years has to be measured against the original cast: title hero Christian Gerhaher to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste to Gerd Albrecht, director Christoph Marthaler to Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.
