ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The film “Music at the Château de Fontainebleau” offers a fascinating glimpse into the often-forgotten protagonists of French court culture: queens, influential mistresses, and artistically active women who decisively shaped the musical history of the château and their era.
In the 18th century, during the Age of Enlightenment, some of them succeeded in breaking free from restrictive gender roles and reclaiming the arts—especially music—for themselves. Educated and often musically gifted themselves, these early influencers courageously and strategically pursued their artistic visions. They challenged rigid court conventions, fostered avant-garde movements, and thus left a lasting mark on French musical history—as the film impressively demonstrates using historical sources.
For the documentary, the musicians perform works by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Antonio Sacchini and Gaspare Spontini at the original locations of the Château de Fontainebleau – including the magnificent Imperial Theatre, which has never before been used for musical film recordings.
