  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

This film by Clara Keilbach and Valentin Zuckmantel documents the creative development of a chamber opera written by Paul Müller Reyes. It captures the ideas, struggles, and challenges faced by everyone involved leading up to the premiere on November 7th, 2022, at Maxhaus in Düsseldorf. The documentary offers an insight into all departments, illustrating the creative process as well as the rehearsals and technical production. It takes a village – this one took a city, and we’re so grateful to everyone involved. The central theme in le système sacrificiel is the ritualistic act surrounding a sacrifice, which opens up a liminal space between worldly normality and religious space. The focus is not on the linear execution of the sacrifice itself, but on the individual components and the perspectives from which the ritual is observed. These divide the work into four scenes: Space, Offerer, Victim, and Addressee.

German-Colombian composer Paul Clímaco Müller Reyes (born 1996 in Aachen) is in the final stages of his master’s studies under Oliver Schneller at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. During the 2022/2023 academic year, he spent an Erasmus exchange period at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, studying in the classes of Clemens Gadenstätter and Klaus Lang. His work focuses on exploring spatiality and blending acoustic and electronic sounds; he is interested in creating acoustic situations that resonate with the listener through the act of active listening. In the spring of 2021, Paul held a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia for a residency at the Cité des Arts in Paris. In November 2022, he premiered his first chamber opera, *le système sacrificiel*, in Düsseldorf. Paul is a prize-winner of the 10th “Acht Brücken” International Composition Competition in Cologne and the Soundcinema Düsseldorf, and was a finalist at the 2023 *Tage der neuen Klaviermusik* (Days of New Piano Music) in Graz. He also focuses significantly on composing music for film.
