The magnificent city of Ys, pearl of Brittany, rises proudly and uniquely in the Bay of Douarnenez. Built below sea level, it is protected from the destructive waves by a powerful dike, pierced by locks whose mechanism is guarded by the royal family. To seal peace with the warlike Prince Karnac, the King of Ys grants him the hand of his eldest daughter, Margared. But the return of Mylio, long missing, sows discord in the mind of the bride-to-be, who breaks her vows at the altar, causing the beginning of a new war. Margared is mortified to learn that her sister Rozenn will marry Mylio if he triumphs over Karnac’s armies. Wounded in her love, the brooding beauty prepares to betray the secrets of the city of Ys to the enemy of her people.

The libretto of Le Roi d’Ys is loosely based on the Breton legends surrounding King Gradlon, Princess Dahut, and the mythical city of Ys, whose tragic fate echoes that of Atlantis. Édouard Lalo’s interest in this mystical and wondrous folklore stemmed from the Breton origins of his second wife, for whom he wrote the role of Margared. Long rejected by all Parisian opera houses, the work, finally premiered in 1888 at the Opéra-Comique, brought Lalo a triumph as belated as it was resounding, firmly establishing itself within the Wagnerian tradition of French opera. Conductor Samy Rachid, based in Boston since his time at the Opera Studio, leads this powerful and vibrant score in a new production by Olivier Py, marking his grand return to the Opéra National du Rhin.
