ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Le Pauvre Matelot is an opera (described as a “complaint” ) in three acts by Darius Milhaud on a libretto by Jean Cocteau created on December 16, 1927at the Opéra-Comique . Lasting approximately 35 minutes, it is dedicated to the composer Henri Sauguet .
Argument
The action takes place “in the present day” at the port.
Milhaud sums up the story as follows:
“The subject of The Poor Sailor is simple: a woman has had no news for several years from her husband, who is a sailor. Despite her father-in-law’s insistence, she refuses to remarry. The husband returns unexpectedly; he first goes to a neighbor’s house, who informs him of his wife’s virtuous attitude and her misery; the husband wants to “see her happiness from the outside.” He pretends to be a friend of her husband’s to his wife …”
