ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Le nozze d’Ercole e d’Ebe (The Marriage of Hercules and Hebe) is an opera in two acts composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck to an Italian libretto by an unknown author. Sometimes referred to as a festa teatrale or serenata, it was first performed in Pillnitz near Dresden on 29 June 1747 to celebrate the double wedding of the Bavarian elector and the Saxon crown prince to each other’s sisters
On July 6, 2024, a semi-staged performance of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s festival opera “Le nozze d’Ercole e d’Ebe” took place in the premises of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature (https://www.adwmainz.de/startseite.html). The plenary hall thus became a theater hall – for the first time in the history of the Academy, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2024. The occasion was the completion of the project “Christoph Willibald Gluck – Complete Works” (GGA – https://www.gluck-gesamtausgabe.de/) in December 2023, which was most recently led by Dr. Tanja Gölz and Prof. Dr. Klaus Pietschmann and, after 44 years of funding as part of the Academy’s program, presented Gluck’s complete works in a total of 59 volumes, supplemented by a catalogue of works and sources, as well as a volume of letters and documents.
This video documents the modern premiere of the original version of Gluck’s opera Le nozze d’Ercole e d’Ebe, edited by Dr. Tanja Gölz and published in 2009 by Bärenreiter-Verlag, Kassel, as part of the GGA. This festival opera premiered in Dresden in 1747 and is in many ways exemplary of Gluck’s early work, which was influenced by Italian opera seria and led him to numerous European opera centers. The performance was also embedded in the workshop “Venues and Musical Practice in Historic Gardens as Cultural Heritage.” It was organized by the interdisciplinary DFG project “Garden and Music Theater at the Dresden Court in the 17th and 18th Centuries” (https://www.musikwissenschaft.uni-mai…), which is located at the Institute for Art History and Musicology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and is carried out by Sebastian Herold M.A., Dr. Helena Langewitz and Leonie Matt M.A. under the direction of Prof. Dr. Matthias Müller and Prof. Dr. Klaus Pietschmann. Gluck’s opera is one of the central research subjects of this project, as it was premiered in the Pillnitz Palace Park in 1747.
