  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Le Mariage forcé is a comedy-ballet in one act and in prose by Molière , Pierre Beauchamp and Lully 1 , performed for the first time at the Palais du Louvre , by order of His Majesty theJanuary 29, 1664, and then given to the public at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on February 15, 1664by the troop of Monsieur, the King ‘s only brother .

In 1672, following the break-up between Molière and Lully, Le Mariage forcé was performed with new interludes by Marc-Antoine Charpentier2 ; the premiere took place at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on July 8 .

Sganarelle, 53 years old and wealthy, wants to marry the young and beautiful Dorimène. His friend Geronimo advises him against such a marriage. The gallant asks their opinion on this point to two philosophers, one of whom follows Aristotle and the other Pyrrho , as well as to two gypsies who play music: their answers only increase the perplexity of the candidate for marriage. But then Dorimène enters the scene with her lover Lycaste to whom she does not hesitate to tell, without knowing that Sganarelle hears her, that she is only marrying for money and intends to be a widow within six months. Edified by such remarks, Sganarelle wants to take back his promise of marriage to his father-in-law but Alcidas, Dorimène’s brother, then challenges Sganarelle to a duel and, faced with the latter’s refusal to fight, begins to beat him with a stick. The unfortunate man, willingly or unwillingly, is forced to go through this “forced marriage”.
