  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The court ballet experienced a season of extraordinary vitality in the France of Louis XIV, who found in Jean-Baptiste Lully the perfect ally to bring to the pinnacle of perfection that elite entertainment that became a precious tool for celebrating absolute power.

Le carnaval premiered at the Louvre in January 1668 and was revived at the Opéra in the autumn of 1675, with texts by Benserade, Molière and Quinault. In a bizarre anthology of theatrical ideas, characters linked to the pastoral, bourgeois world of the commedia dell’arte alternate on stage, without neglecting the exoticism and “turcherie” so popular at the time. Harlequin and Trivellino, Pulcinella and Scaramouche, the bourgeois gentleman, the shepherds of Arcadia, the Ottoman Mufti, Spaniards, Italians, Gypsies, Basques and Egyptians animate the different entrées of the Mascarade royal, in a solemn and at the same time amused tribute to carnival, a moment of rediscovered social unity that sets no limits to the imagination.
