ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Le cantatrici villane is an opera in two acts by the composer Valentino Fioravanti with a libretto by Giuseppe Palomba . The first performance took place at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in Naples in 1798 or in 1799 A revised one-act version was performed at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice in 1801, with the title Le virtuose ridicole , with a libretto revised by Giuseppe Maria Foppa and set in Frascati rather than Casoria.
Le cantatrici villane , a work «rich in inspiration in its pyrotechnic scenic inventions», combines pages of biting satire of the eighteenth-century theatrical world with moments of greater lyricism.
An opera by Antonio Cagnoni based on the same libretto, with the title Don Bucefalo , was performed in Milan in 1847.
Plot
The story takes place in the 18th century in Casoria , near Naples.
Three country girls, under the guidance of the ignorant music teacher Don Bucefalo, aspire to become bel canto virtuosos, and a young man, Don Marco, also dreams of becoming a singer. Agata and Giannetta are jealous of Rosa, who seems to be Don Bucefalo’s favorite.
Things get complicated when Carlino, Rosa’s jealous husband and a boastful soldier, unexpectedly returns. Fearing betrayal by Rosa, Carlino breaks in incognito to Rosa’s house, where a dress rehearsal is taking place for a demanding opera in which Don Bucefalo’s students are scheduled to perform. The arrival of the gendarmes, led by Giannetta, puts an end to the confusion, and harmony is restored between Carlino and Rosa.
