  Act 1 The wealthy «artigiano» (craftsman) Vanesio wishes to rise in society by marrying a noble lady. The maid Larinda disguises herself as a fencing master and dance teacher and tests the candidate’s chances by giving him instruction in social etiquette. The pitiful result of all her efforts confirms Larinda’s opinion that this nouveau riche can be duped and is a good match for her.

  Act 2 So she appears in a different disguise and veiled as a noble lady who, out of longing for Vanesio, dares to offer him her hand in marriage. As this hand presents the notarial transfer of all the Baronessa’s property to the groom, the proposal is convincing enough for Vanesio. He swears fidelity and insists on a quick marriage.

  Act 3 The delusion is followed by a prompt awakening. After the wedding, Vanesio finds himself cheated of both his wife’s noble blood and her dowry. She responds to his fits of madness with impotence and further female seduction skills, until the deceived man finally counts himself lucky because of the providence of fate: the clever, pretty bourgeois woman has defeated the imaginary grande dame.
