This delightful opera by Prokofiev has a comic plot and complex origin: a 17th-century tale written by Giambattista Basile, adapted for the theater by Carlo Gozzi in the following century, translated into Russian by Meyerhold, and adapted to a French libretto by the composer himself. and by Vera Janacópulos, a Brazilian soprano of the first importance in her time for promoting names like Villa Lobos in Europe. The plot, which flirts with fantastic surrealism, tells the saga of a king to cure his son’s melancholy. To this end, the king summons a series of entertainments, characters from the Commedia dell’Arte, wizards, witches and a radiant musicality between Russian music and the romantic tradition (how can you not remember the famous march?). These elements make this opera a unique event. Also unique for the unprecedented collaboration with the actor and scenic director invited to lead this production: Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos. A notable figure on the stages and screens of Brazil, Luiz Carlos has circus, masks and magic in his origins, being the creator of the Piolim theater circus. Necessary expressions for our “three oranges” to enchant everyone, curing any and all melancholy once and for all!
