ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Inspired by Chueca and Valverde’s work, ‘Last Year by Rain’ (1888), ‘Zarzuela of the Umbrellas’ is a version that incorporates musical themes and plot lines from other popular works in the so-called “genre chico” (small genre), such as ‘La gran vía’ (The Gran Via) and ‘Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente’ (Water, Sugars and Liquor).
‘Last Year by Rain’ is filled with popular characters and comical references to that year, 1888, when it rained nonstop across the country. A satirical depiction of turn-of-the-century Spain, it premiered to enormous acclaim at Madrid’s Nuevo Apolo Theater in March 1889. ‘Zarzuela of the Umbrellas’ is a 21st-century version with a fresh, fun, dynamic, and contemporary perspective.
This Zarzuela of the Umbrellas is the result of a collaboration between students and professionals. Participating in the event are the University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra, the University of Navarra Choir, groups from the Theatre Training Plan and the Performing Arts Production Program, students from the Design Degree (ETSA), and the Gayarre Association of Friends of the Opera (AGAO).
