Since Jean Cocteau’s play was first performed at the Comédie Française in 1930, The Human Voice has been performed non-stop on stages, television screens and over the airwaves, performed by Anouk Aimée, Liv Ullman, Anna Magnani and Ingrid Bergman.

“The Human Voice” is a role for outstanding actresses, and since 1958, when Francis Poulenc composed the main mono-opera of the world repertoire based on Cocteau’s text, also for outstanding singers: the first premiere of the Perm Opera in the 2023/24 season will be a benefit performance for Nadezhda Pavlova. Under the direction of conductor Vladimir Tkachenko, Poulenc’s score will be performed in the performance, framed by a prologue and epilogue, written by the leader of new Russian music, composer Vladimir Gorlinsky, specifically commissioned by the theater.

Director Dmitry Volkostrelov rhymes “The Human Voice” with another legendary monodrama of the 20th century – Franz Xaver Krötz’s play “Concert on Requests” (1972), the text of which consists of stage directions sequentially describing the actions of the heroine.
