  Music theater based on Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” supplemented with new compositions by Kyungjin Lim

  Carmen grows up in a dystopia destroyed by war and struggles to find her place in the world. Her voice, her body – are her assets. Surrounded by trauma and darkness, she struggles to survive by any means necessary until Don José enters her life and confronts her with the ghosts of her past. This not only offers an unexpected opportunity to turn her fate around and come to terms with the past, but also leads to an emotionally charged escape into the contrasting, dazzling rave world of Escamillo. Social milieus collide in the intoxication, boundaries become blurred. Once caught up in the current, it is difficult to escape the maelstrom: Carmen recognizes the danger, but is she still up to it?

  This 100-minute musical theatre evening based on the well-known opera by Bizet is complemented by new compositions based on the musical material provided by Korean composer Kyungjin Lim. Students from the HfMT Hamburg, the HMTM Hannover and the Conservatorio di Piacenza will sing, play and make music. A dance ensemble from the Contempory Dance School Hamburg, the Korea National University of Arts and the Frese Drama School will take on the role of the choir.
