ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Giuseppe Verdi Retirement Home for Musicians
Concert Hall, May 17, 2003
In memory of Berta Bandini.
A Traviata by very young people for the elderly residents of the Retirement Home for Musicians, magically born from the very spaces of the Home and transforming the Hall, throwing open the windows, letting in air, sky, and life. For the elderly, lined up in the stalls from halfway down the hall, the amazement of a new formula, bold and fresh, joyful with 19th-century costumes, well-coiffed hair, confident in a winning immediacy. A novelty back then, when entertainment was rare and official. Extensive rehearsal work, the trust of Lorenzo Arruga, the promoter of the initiative, in the young director Maria Elena Mexia, and, behind them, the As.Li. Co. formation of the lead actress, Loredana Arcuri, the transparent dedication of Alfredo, Felice Palamara, 18, and the seriousness of Germont, Giorgio Valerio, destined for a long career. Everyone—artists, supporting actors, dancers, and extras—experiences the extraordinary nature of the occasion.
The presence of tenor Felice Palamara is almost a scoop. A predestined figure, born in Tropea in 1985, he was miraculously cured of a serious illness in 2008, ordained a priest in 2011, and parish priest of Pennaconi, in the province of Vibo Valentia. Beloved by his parishioners for his commitment to fighting organized crime, he has endured intimidation, and in 2024, he prevented a poisoning at the altar with bleach poured into the wine at Mass. Charitable and radiant with forgiveness, praising the beauty of Tropea and creation, he preaches and lives with the transparent dedication with which he sang as a tenor. The recording is incomplete; the Feast of Flora scene is missing (unrecorded) from Act II.
