The action takes place in the port of the imaginary city of Cantabreda, in the north of Spain , on a contemporary date to the premiere (1936).
In the port is the tavern of Marola. Nobody knows the origin of Marola, it is only known that the tavern was paid for by the bandit Juan de Eguía, whom everyone believes to be her husband.
The Simpson sailor talks about Leandro (a fisherman in love with Marola). Marola and Leandro fall in love. Abel, a teenager accordion player , also falls in love with Marola but it is not reciprocated.
A group of women from the town reproach Marola for driving all the men crazy, but she defends herself by telling them that they don’t pay attention to their husbands. Juan de Eguía hits Marola before Abel’s impotence.
The next day Abel tells what happened, which makes everyone present look for Juan to ask him for explanations. Leandro talks with Marola, who confesses that Juan de Eguía is his father, before which Leandro convinces his lover to run away with him.
Juan de Eguía appears again and promises Leandro Marola’s hand in exchange for him bringing a bundle of cocaine into the city. Leandro accepts and, accompanied by his beloved, they head in a small boat to a cave that can only be accessed by sea, to load the bundle of cocaine , but they are surprised by a storm and disappear.
Abel sings to the missing Marola, while saddened Juan tells everyone present that she is really his daughter. Shortly after, the sailor Simpson brings the good news that Leandro and Marola are alive and they are heading to the port detained by the police. Juan confesses to being the real culprit of everything that happened and is arrested, while Leandro and Marola are released.
