ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Synopsis
In France in the 18th century , opposite the Au cœur volant inn
Private Larose Pompon, of the French Guards Regiment , briefly meets his fiancée Nicole. Nicole’s aunt, the wealthy widow Madame Jobin, has forbidden Nicole to marry until she herself remarries. Larose wonders who he could introduce to Madame Jobin, and the two lovers arrange to meet at nine o’clock in the evening. Sergeant Lanternick, an honest Alsatian , enters; Larose thinks that the sergeant might be the solution. Feigning drunkenness, Larose approaches Madame Jobin’s house, as if to let himself in; in order to allow Lanternick to come to the ladies’ aid. However, the sergeant, too shy, declines their invitation to stay for supper, on the pretext that he does not have permission at ten o’clock. Nicole confides to her aunt that her admirer’s name is Larose, and Madame Jobin, who knows the regiment’s colonel, is determined to request leave for the man who rescued them. When Lanternick returns, Nicole tries to awaken her feelings for her aunt, but Lanternick thinks it’s him she fancies. Larose convinces the sergeant to write Nicole a letter, which he actually intends to give to Madame Jobin. Retreat strikes. Although only one soldier has the ten o’clock leave, they both arrive. In the darkness, Larose, adopting an Alsatian accent, asks Madame Jobin to take a walk with him. Then the suspicious rural policeman Broussaille arrives on patrol: he comes upon the two pairs: Larose with Madame Jobin, Nicole with Lanternick. In the confusion, each soldier woos the wrong woman, and a quartet of kisses ensues. Finally, in the confusion, Sergeant Lanternick is discovered kneeling before Madame Jobin, and so agrees to marry the wealthy widow – to the great delight of Nicole and Larose.Quoted from Wikipedia
