ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Anyone who studies the history of Italy cannot ignore the powerful Medicis. With their luxurious court in Florence, the banking family has been at the center of musical practice for centuries. La Pellegrina is one of the most spectacular fruits of their reign. This music theater piece – a collaboration between various composers – is strictly speaking an intermedio, but it points forward to the Baroque opera.
As the culmination of Ferdinando de’ Medici and Christine de Lorraine’s wedding in 1589, La Pellegrina featured a significant collective of artists, including Caccini, Cavalieri and Peri. Skip Sempé, with singers, soloists and a veritable Renaissance orchestra, dives into the lavish score that explores all corners of the musical spectrum: from solo monody to thirty-part counterpoint.
