  La grotta di Trofonio or The cave of Trofonio is an opera by Antonio Salieri on a libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti. The opera debuted on October 12, 1785 at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

  The comedy opera La Grotta di Trofonio (1785) is considered Salieri’s masterpiece. For more than thirty years, it has been successfully staged in a large number of European capitals. Salieri composed the work at the height of his fame, after his return from Paris to Vienna, where he was appointed as court composer by Josef II. The libretto is by court poet Giovanni Battista Casti. The original story is fairytale and tender, with a serious undertone. You can hear that in the balanced music, which is light and playful, but also dramatic in time and time. The Nieternian story is about the two daughters of Aristone. They can’t be more different. Ofelia is the introvert, who has deliberately chosen the serious, intellectual Artemidoro. Dori is the extrovert and rash daughter, who recognizes that enthusiasm in her partner Plistene. For Aristone, it is a thorn in the side that both daughters have been fighting each other for a lifetime. While they are both focused on his recognition as a father. He instructs both his girls to organize a big party together with their partners to celebrate love. Because that seems to turn into a fiasco, Aristone comes to special, call it Trophonian interventions, to introduce his daughters and their sweethearts to a world outside their comfort zone.   Plot

  The daughters of Aristone, Ophelia and Dori, are in love with two young people, Artemidoro and Plistene, now close to the wedding. The girls chose their boy according to the common character: the philosopher Artemidoro is in love with the serious Ophelia, while the hilarious Plystene of the always cheerful Dori. One day, however, the two young men accidentally enter the cave of the magician Trofonio, who makes them change the characters: Artemidoro immediately becomes prone to rice, while Plistene becomes serious. Ophelia and Dori discover this, baffled. Aristone sets the date of their wedding, but realizes what happened and suggests, in vain, to her daughters to change husband. Again by chance the two young captains in the cave of Trofonio, which makes their characters normal again. But this time it is the two sisters who enter the cave, and their characters exchange: Ophelia becomes joking while Dori becomes very serious. Aristone invokes the magician, who reveals the magic of his cave, and makes sure that the girls return to normal: in the general blaze, marriages between the two couples are celebrated.
