ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Based on David Belasco’s drama The Girl of the Golden West, the script was written by Guelfo Civinini, Carlo Zangarini. Set designer: Zinovy ??Margolin. Costume designer: Olga Shaishmelashvili. Director: Vasily Barkhatov
Perhaps Giacomo Puccini’s most unique opera, The Daughter of the West, created in 1910, takes the audience to the Wild West. In view of the universal themes of the work and the location-independent conflicts of the plot, the director Vasiliy Barkhatov set the play in Western Europe. This is the first work of the Russian director in Budapest, and with its innovative approach it reflects on the most current problems of today. During Puccini’s trip to New York in 1907, he saw David Belasco’s play and decided to set the somewhat unusual Wild West love story to music on the opera stage. The theater material turned out to be a good choice, the effective storytelling leads the audience to the conclusion with a sure hand. Minnie’s character also fits well into the ranks of Puccini’s heroines: she is driven by love and passion, and is therefore not afraid to risk her life.
The work was directed by Vassily Barkhatov, who has been employed all over Russia and Europe, and entered the repertoire of the Erkel Theater.
