ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
“La Corte del Faraón” is a zarzuela called “Biblical Operetta” or even “Auto Sacramental” in one act and five scenes. It premiered in Madrid at the Eslava Theater on January 21, 1910, with a libretto by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel de Palacios and music by Vicente Lleó.
It is a kind of zarzuela, where elements of operetta, zarzuela, magazine, and even cuplé are mixed. It is framed within the genre called “Sicaliptic”, which is famous for its dialogues full of insinuations and sexual connotations, songs with a spicy aroma and vaudeville-like entanglements, which was in fashion during the first third of the 20th century. This work is humorous, it is set in Egypt and its musical references make it at times a parody of Aida by Verdi.
