La cifra is an opera in two acts by Antonio Salieri with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte . The first performance took place at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 11 December1789. The première was followed by a performance in Dresden on 13 October 1790. There were subsequent productions in Germany and Austria between 1789 and 1805. The first performance took placeon 16 October1790 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan .
The work, a dramma giocoso, is set in Scotland , and was written for Adriana Ferraresi Del Bene , the first Fiordiligi in Mozart ‘s Così fan tutte . The music is “an effective blend of the serious and the comic, the noble and the pastoral”.
Plot
Fideling, a Scottish lord, is looking for a noblewoman with whom he has fallen in love. Lisotta, the daughter of the mayor of the city, is promised in marriage to Sandrino, but she is in love with Fideling and believes she is the woman he is looking for. Eurilla also loves Fideling but has no hope as she is a simple shepherdess. In the second act, before her true identity is revealed, she sings Alfin son sola … Alone and sad among torments . Finally it is discovered that Eurilla is the daughter of a nobleman. Eurilla and Fideling are reunited and the opera ends happily.
