  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The Cantata dei Pastori is a work of the late seventeenth-century religious theater , written in verse, in which the birth of Jesus is represented

The first edition was published by Andrea Perrucci (1651-1706) in 1698 with the title: Il Vero Lume tra l’Ombre, or the Enriched Spelonca for the Birth of the Human Word , using the pseudonym of Ruggiero Casimiro Ugone.

    Plot
The plot narrates the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and the pitfalls that the Devils put in their way to prevent the birth of Jesus . The Devils will finally be defeated by the Angels and, at the end, there will be the adoration of the various and classic characters of the nativity scene : shepherds, hunters and fishermen.

Among the protagonists of the sacred representation is included Razzullo, a scribe sent to Palestine for the census , a comic character perpetually hungry.

It was subsequently revised in numerous re-editions and, at the end of the 18th century , another comic character was introduced, Sarchiapone , a barber on the run for having committed two murders. Over time, the tone of the work has turned more and more towards the comic and the profane, so much so that in 1889 its performance was temporarily suspended.
