Tobias Mill – a British entrepreneur – has made a ‘deal’ with his American business acquaintance Slook: he is allowed to marry Mill’s daughter Fanny in exchange for a large share in his company. However, when Slook arrives in England, the ‘deal’ turns out very differently. Fanny is not impressed by the filthy rich American and certainly not by the deal her father has made – she decides for herself what to do with her life, and besides, she already has a boyfriend: Edward. He works in her father’s company as an accountant. Together they chase Slook out of the room with threats. Slook goes to Mill to tell him that he is renouncing the deal – but Mill challenges him to a duel. Slook flees the house – and on the way sees the couple in love kissing. Slook is moved and ashamed of the ‘deal’. He speaks to Edward and makes him a shareholder in his company. Fanny and Edward can now get married and start their own lives.
