It is the story of an episode in Bartali’s life, which dates back to the years of resistance and remained hidden for a long time but even now it is not known to everyone, due to the reluctance of the great cycling champion, who did not like to boast about what he had done.
The episode is this. Between 1943 and 1944, Bartali brought documents and passport photos from Florence to Assisi, hidden in the frame of his bicycle, where a secret printing house produced the documents necessary for the expatriation of many Jews. The archbishop of Florence Elia Dalla Costa and the rabbi Nathan Cassuto had asked him and Bartali did not hold back. Without mentioning it to anyone, he pedaled several times between Tuscany and Umbria with that secret load. They stopped him, shot at him, he had to hide, but in the end thanks to him over eight hundred Jews managed to expatriate. Bartali didn’t like to talk about it: “Good is done, but not said. And certain medals hang on the soul, not on the jacket”.
