ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
PLOT
The action begins one spring day at the mill. Its owner, Olesis, nicknamed Kuprelis because of his appearance, opens up an unhealable wound in his heart to Ignasėlis, who has come to work – he tells the story of the painfully experienced only love of his life. Following the calling of “God’s musician”, Kuprelis gets a job as an organist at the Skardžiai Church. There he meets her, Kunigunda Gervydžiukė (Gundė), who “enlightened Kuprelis’s dull life”. The young people fall in love and, despite the pressure from Gundė’s parents and environment due to Olesis’s appearance, dream of marriage. However, their dreams are shattered by an unexpected guest from the past…
ABOUT THE WORK
Ignas Šeinias’ “Kuprelis” can be called the first Lithuanian novel about love. It was published in 1913 and is described in the history of Lithuanian literature as one of the most prominent works of the impressionist movement. The 71st edition of the Čiurlionis interprets the second, revised version of the novel, published in 1932. The problems raised by I. Šeinias, which were considered modern at the beginning of the 20th century, are still extremely relevant today. The work discusses existential issues, human values, and the fate of the artist, and talks about the relationship between man and nature, and the meaning of inner and outer beauty. The plot of the novel is developed during the years of the ban on printing in Latin characters, so the theme of Lithuanianness and the struggle for national consciousness is also important in the work.(Visited 24 times, 1 visits today)
