ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
‘Kraus, the last romantic’ focuses on the biography of the Gran Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus, an eminent figure of Spanish poetry in the second half of the 20th century. Thanks to a large number of unpublished images recorded by Alfredo Kraus himself with his Super 8 camera, which he was fond of, the viewer will be able to discover the life of the tenor narrated through his own eyes.
The documentary addresses his life marked by his own love story that ended up making him one of the romantic heroes that he played so much throughout his career as Werther , by the French composer Jules Massenet, the tenor’s favorite. In parallel with the protagonist of this opera, in turn an adaptation of the novel ‘The Sufferings of Young Werther’, by Goethe, it is shown how Kraus faced the performances of him and prepared his roles, rehearsal after rehearsal.
His work went beyond the stage and impacted the lyrical world of the moment. The end of his life ended up being similar to that of dramatic operas and that of his favorite character when he died for love, according to family members, artists, colleagues, friends, journalists, musicians and experts who contribute their testimony and memories in this audiovisual production. .
Defense of classical opera
The documentary shows the way in which Kraus, characterized by his refined technique, his level of demand and his commitment to work, defended in his life a conception of classical and dogmatic opera.
The importance of the opera for the protagonist is portrayed through images that show him rehearsing behind the scenes, blending in with his characters, entering into the role of romantic hero and anticipating the tragic ending implicit in his own love story. The narrative addresses the beginnings of his biography as a tenor, his debut, his first performance with María Callas or his vocal technique as one of the keys to his success.
A love story similar to that of its dramatic characters
Without losing sight of his professional biography, it also reveals the personal side of the artist and his deep love for his wife, Rosa Blanca Ley-Bird . The documentary tells the life of the couple, inseparable and constantly traveling around the world, the moments of rest with his wife and children in Lanzarote, as well as the tragic death of Rosa. His departure will mark the end of Kraus’s life, unable to overcome his absence.
