Johann Strauss – The King Without a Crown is a 1986 film biography of the “Waltz King” Johann Strauss by Franz Antel, starring Oliver Tobias in the title role , made at the DEFA studios in Potsdam-Babelsberg and produced jointly with Austria.

    Plot
The story begins with a classic Vienna Opera Ball event of the present day, in 1986. From there, the Blue Danube Waltz flashes back to the turn of the century around 1900.

Flashback: The waltz king Johann Strauss Jr. has just died, and we look back on his abundant life, his loves and sorrows, his successes and triumphs, but also his fears and problems with women, state and church. The plot focuses above all on his relationships with his three wives: There is his meeting with Henriette Treffz, called Jetty , who is to become his first wife and who lovingly cares for the aspiring composer. She even takes over his management and displays a high level of professionalism. Jetty dies as early as 1878. His second wife, Lily Strauss, whom the waltz king married just 50 days after the death of her beloved Jetty, is an extremely ambitious soubrette who hopes to make a career through her already very famous husband. The marriage failed, and Strauss divorced the coquettish German woman in 1882, which was a powerful affront in Catholic Austria and also made a new marriage under Catholic law impossible.

Since 1883, the Waltz King has lived with Adele Deutsch, 31 years his junior, who has fled religiously rigid Vienna to her aunt, Baroness Amelie, in Saxony. Strauss follows her, becomes a Saxon citizen, and converts to Protestantism. Only now, in 1887, is he able to marry Adele Strauss, making her his third and last wife. Finally, the court in Vienna relents, and one day Emperor Franz Joseph I calls the convert back to Vienna. The return of the “prodigal son” becomes an unprecedented triumph, and Strauss celebrates his greatest successes, culminating in the revival of his operetta ” Die Fledermaus ” at the Imperial Court Opera. One year after Strauss’s death at the age of 73, his widow Adele, a meticulous manager and executor of his works, tried at the last minute to prevent the printing of a Strauss biography written by his brother Eduard , who had always been in Johann’s shadow.
