  Haasje and Griet’s father is very busy at work and hasn’t come home for a week, so the sisters are on their own. The fridge is empty and by now all the food in the house is gone. The girls come up with a plan and trade all their stuff for sandwiches and candy: toys, furniture, and even the computer are sacrificed. But it doesn’t take long before the whole house is empty and there is nothing left to trade. Time for action!

  Little Hare and Gretel decide to go look for their father, but where does he actually work? They decide to leave a trail of cookie crumbs during their search, so that they can at least find their way back home. But Gretel is so hungry… Fortunately, they meet three special women who come to their rescue.

  The production Koekjes is based on the story of the same name by Annet Schaap from her book De Meisjes , in which she adapted seven fairy tales. In Holland Opera ‘s version, the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel becomes a painfully modern story about two girls in a world where adults are cynical and calculating. A number of eclectic characters are added to the fairy tale, such as Luizenmoeder -like parents and the three ‘LieveMoeders’, who make you spontaneously crave a cookie.

  Holland Opera excels at the so-called dusty genre of making opera accessible to a broad audience of all ages, with productions such as Odiezee , Roodhapje , and Reinaert de V — the latter was nominated for the Podiumkids Audience Award earlier this year .
