“Katerina” is the first Ukrainian lyrical folk opera. Created by Nikolai Arkas based on a poem by Taras Shevchenko .
Plot
Ukrainian girl Katerina fell in love with a handsome warrior. The novel ended with the officer’s promise to make a “real Muscovite” out of Katerina, if only fate would allow him to stay alive. However, the girl realized too late that she was an ordinary toy for a Muscovite. Now she is the laughingstock of the whole village, and in her arms with her young son she is forced to walk to Moscow in search of her lover. By chance, on the way, she meets the Russian army returning from the campaign, but her lover does not recognize Katerina and refuses her son. Leaving the child on the road, the girl rushes into the hole.
