Cain is an opera by Eugen d’Albert with a libretto by Heinrich Bulthaupt , first performed in 1900 in Berlin. The plot is inspired by the biblical character Cain and the libretto is written in German.

    Argument
The first family meets in the evening in front of Adam’s hut. Hanoch wants to know what it was like in paradise. Suddenly, Abel recounts the memories of paradise that his brother Cain cannot share. Adam remains devoted and says a night prayer. Everyone except Cain goes to the hut for a night’s sleep. Cain, alone, invites the Lord to speak to him. During this prayer, Lucifer emerges from the rock in the background, and Cain is surprised by the dark figure. Lucifer responds to Cain’s complaint: Through me you have become what is good for you: becoming and change, happiness and despair, good and evil, life and death. Cain recognizes Lucifer’s serpent. Nevertheless, Lucifer seduces Cain into seeing redemption as salvation from earthly suffering. At daybreak, Lucifer disappears.

The sun rises, Abel leaves the hut and awakens Cain with his call. There is a quarrel between the brothers. Cain accuses Abel, but Abel falls into his arms. The quarrel escalates, and Cain smashes the altar with an axe. Furious, he finally kills Abel. The Lord calls out: Cain, Cain, where is your brother Abel? Cain tries in vain to deny his deed. The rest of the family leaves the hut and becomes aware of the terrible event. Cain is determined to kill his son Hanoch, whom Adah holds while screaming. Adam intervenes with the axe, but is stopped by Adah. Cain is deeply shaken and surrounds his wife and child. A storm arises, and the Lord imposes original sin.
