Kārlis Zariņš was born on July 6, 1930. After graduating from the Latvian Academy of Music in 1960 and an internship at the Sofia Conservatory in Bulgaria under prof. I. Josifova, in 1960 Kārlis Zariņš became a soloist of the Latvian National Opera. The outstanding artist also sang in the former USSR, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, the artist also performed in France, Austria, Greece, the USA, Canada and elsewhere in the world. Ten years (1970–1980) were spent as a freelance soloist at the Russian State Academic Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, where Kārlis Zariņš sang Hermani, Radames and Jose more than fifty times. Kārlis Zariņš has participated in opera productions at various international festivals – in 1992 he sang in the production of Salome by R. Strauss at the Dreieiha Festival in Germany, as well as in J.
In around 2,000 concerts in Riga and elsewhere in the world, Kārlis Zariņš has sung the tenor parts of Dž. Verdi, VA Mozart, A. Dvořák in the Requiems, G. Mahler’s Eighth Symphony and “Song of the Earth”, A. Schoenberg’s “Gurre’s Songs”, etc. Among the stage partners of Kārlis Zariņš were Grace Bambria, Josephine Barstova, Anna Tomova-Sintova, Gena Dimitrova , Yelena Obraztsova, Irina Arkhipova, Zinaida Palli, Yelena Cherneya, Marija Biešu, Louis Kiliko, George London, Joseph Aulo, Nikolai Gyuzelev, Yevhenii Nesterenko, Yuriy Mazurov, Sergej Leiferkus. In various performances and concerts, Kārlis Zariņš has worked with outstanding conductors – Genādija Roždestvenski, Jurija Svetlanova, Nēmi Jervi, Latvian masters Edgars Ton, Rihardas Glāzup, Leonidas Vīgner, Arvīdas Jansons, etc.
Kārlis Zariņš’s voice in solo songs, chamber music, vocal-instrumental compositions and opera roles has been immortalized in sound recordings.
Kārlis Zariņš was also a professor at the Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Music Academy, among his former students are Jānis Sproģis, Aleksandrs Poliakovs, Ingus Pētersons, Guntars Vētra, Sergejs Jēgers, etc.
For his outstanding contribution to Latvian vocal art, Kārlis Zariņš received the Great Music Award (1994), he is also a laureate of the “Aldara” award.
