ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Rolf Gupta (1967) is one of the leading Norwegian conductors of our time, and is a former chief conductor of both KORK and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. He has also been active as a composer since the late 1980s.
The composer about the work:
“Man will always seek an explanation for the impossible. We can imagine infinity but not comprehend it. In the perspective of eternity, our lives are barely a breath. Even the creation of the universe, life and future death are a blip compared to infinity.
“The Song of the Earth” is a reflection on the wonder, longing and joy of creation. It is also a warning to ourselves. If we do not stop and listen to the song of the earth, we may end up extinguishing our own breath and the fragile nature of which we are a part.
Are we about to destroy ourselves in frustration over the lack of answers? To take care of ourselves, we must take care of our earth. It will do just fine on its own, but without us there will no longer be anyone to search and yearn for answers to the riddle of infinity.
“The Song of the Earth” is a prayer for our planet.”
