ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
“The St. John Passion” is the most precious pearl in the necklace of cantatas created by Bach in his first year of work in Leipzig. And although the work was overshadowed by the more monumental St. Matthew Passion, its special character was highly valued by many musicians. Schumann considered these Passions “much bolder, more powerful, more poetic than those of the Gospel of Matthew.” We can see for ourselves how accurate and truthful his words are.
