ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Vienna celebrates the 200th birthday of its Waltz King, Johann Strauss, with a musical circus spectacular. Based on the operetta Cagliostro, Thomas Brezina has created a new production of the story of the Sicilian magician Cagliostro as a circus show. Johnny Bertl wrote 32 pop songs for the production – a symbiosis of waltz bliss and musical theater sounds.
“Cagliostro” is a rarely performed, almost forgotten piece by Johann Strauss. The character himself comes from Sicily and actually lived there as an alchemist and adventurer.
The renowned Austrian author Thomas Brezina reinterprets the story in a contemporary way. It is a tale of longing, shattered dreams, lies and greed, human gullibility, and the search for true happiness: Cagliostro, the greatest magician and fulfiller of all wishes, is to perform in the circus ring. He is accompanied by Lorenza, a rising star in the music world. A sophisticated pair who know how to seduce people with superficiality and deceive them “in a world of illusions.” The antagonist, Severin, tries to stand up to these overwhelming forces. The search for meaning and the recognition of true love are the driving forces of the narrative. It reflects the times and the courage to forge one’s own path. Spectacular acrobatic numbers round out the work.
The catchy music was arranged by Johnny Bertl, well-known from the Austrian pop scene. He is also the composer of the musical hit “Falco meets Amadeus.” Austrian pop was shaped by artists such as Ludwig Hirsch, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung, Rainhard Fendrich, and Wolfgang Ambros. Composer and producer Bertl is known for a genre-crossing compositional style in which classical, pop, and world music converge.
