ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
General Choi Yun-deok, a famous general of the early Joseon Dynasty who contributed to the development of the North and national defense policy, was a man of great ability who entered the government through the military service examination but rose to the position of Left State Councillor in the civil service.
He also received the posthumous title ‘Jeongnyeol’ from King Sejong.
A posthumous title is a nickname given by a king to a great person who died after making great contributions to the country.
The Gyeongnam Prime Philharmonic Orchestra explained, “We created this original opera to honor the life and achievements of General Choi Yun-deok from Changwon, Gyeongnam, who has been discussed in academic conferences and forums but is not widely known to the general public, in a friendly and easy-to-understand way.”
The opera is composed of Act 1, ‘Choi Yun-deok’s childhood as recorded in Seo Geo-jeong’s Pilwon Japgi’, Act 2, ‘The third conquest of Tsushima Island as recorded in the first year of the Annals of King Sejong’, and Act 3, ‘The northern conquest as recorded in the 15th year of the Annals of King Sejong’.
