Nazib Zhiganov’s opera, written to a libretto by Akhmed Fayzi, is a deeply emotional work dedicated to the life and work of Musa Jalil, an outstanding Tatar poet who became a symbol of courage and fortitude during the Great Patriotic War. The composer recreates Jalil’s heroic fate and feat, accomplished for the sake of the Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, and his image as a poet-hero in a multifaceted, powerful, and compelling manner.
Mikhail Pandzhavidze’s production is dynamic and multifaceted – largely thanks to the active use of stage machinery, which allows the audience to be instantly transported from the Moabit prison in Germany, where the poet spent the last months of his life, to the battlefield, to the hospital, to distant Kazan, where his wife and young daughter remained…
