“Ivan the Terrible” is one of the pinnacles of Sergei Prokofiev’s creative work and his last collaboration with Sergei Eisenstein. Filming began in 1942 in Kazakhstan, under difficult evacuation conditions. The film, released in January 1945, became a classic of world cinema. The first part of “Ivan the Terrible” was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946. The fate of the second part was sad, it was banned and was released only in 1958. The music for the film was not published during Prokofiev’s lifetime. In 1961, conductor Abram Stasevich composed a single work from separate musical fragments – the oratorio “Ivan the Terrible” for choir, orchestra and reader.
