ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Isbé, the first opera by Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville, premiered in 1742, is the only one of the nine with which the composer did not achieve widespread success in the field of musical theatre. True, at that time he was not yet the admired master of the French royal court, nor the protégé of the ruler’s patron of the arts, Madame de Pompadour. Later, as an accomplished master, his large-scale motets were part of the daily routine of the royal chapel, but his instrumental music was also highly regarded in the France of Louis XV. Mondonville also gained great prestige as the principal conductor of the Royal Chapel and as the violinist and principal composer of the first concert series in music history, the Concert Spirituel.
The concert-style performance at Müpa promises to be another significant, and perhaps even sensational, event in the series of explorations and presentations of 17th-18th century works by György Vashegyi and his ensembles.
