ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In the vastness of the great Eurasian steppe, very diverse cultures have come into contact with each other, each with its own musical tradition. This underlying tension is embodied in the vocal repertoires that coexist utopically in this concert: the voices of Ukrainians Mykola Lysenko and Kyrylo Stetsenko versus those of Russians Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Modest Mussorgsky’s songs about death that close the program tinge it with a resigned funereal tone.
