Quote Bühnen Halle:

Eden City – more hell than paradise. A girl in hiding, a prostitute self-confidently analyzing her situation, a suitor, an aging pimp reading Karl Marx, criminals big and small – they all stumble through the labyrinth of their environment and longings, always looking for the good life, a piece of profit from big money and redemption of their souls. In his monumental novel Im Stein , Clemens Meyer leads us into dirty back rooms, nocturnal streets, abysses and souls of the people of a fictional city in a haunted, dizzying language . The novel brought the author, who comes from Halle and lives in Leipzig, the final breakthrough as one of the internationally important writers of our time. Im Stein is poetically strange and realistic at the same timea history of (East) German conditions of the here and now – and at the same time, interlacing mythological narratives of the collective consciousness, leads virtuously to fundamental questions of the globalized present. Based on the real discovery of a child pornographic ring in Leipzig at the beginning of the 90s, the novel finds an intense language for the most intimate and in the bourgeois understanding supposedly inalienable: love, eroticism and (purchasable) sexuality. An epoch-making portrait of an urban society after the failure of the great utopias is drawn.

The young composer and sound artist Sara Glojnarić (* 1991) pursues an intermedia compositional approach with a special interest in contemporary theatrical and multimedia forms. Accordingly, her approach to a novel as the basis for a new major work of music theater is not comparable to the logic of literary opera in the classical sense, but attempts a contemporary new edition of this genre as an assembled and hybrid form: music, text, show, performance and film combine to form one strong suggestion for contemporary music theater.

In an emancipatory aesthetic with a strong gestural character, she deals with the social potential of pop culture and the socio-political consequences for social action. With the opera Im Stein , a musical theater will emerge whose sound will play with the emblematic sounds of the late 80s, 90s and early 00s, as well as with the overwhelming machinery of the so-called grand opera and the resistant practice of new music.

The music will also be inspired by the composer’s personal memories, based on her Croatian origins and the associated experiences of a former Yugoslavia and its remains. Over the course of the evening, the opera house will explore a variety of sound identities – it will be a radio booth, a brothel, a techno club, a smoky small town pub and sometimes everything at the same time. As a modern odyssey of the night and the rough Passionsweg of the present, the fourth commissioned work by the Halle Opera also addresses the major themes of operatic history of rise and fall, greed, tenderness and fantasies of redemption in a disenchanted world. in the director Michael v. zur Mühlen , stage and costume designer Christoph Ernstand video artist Martin Mallon will put together the world premiere as a digital multimedia stream. “
