ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Drama for music in a prologue and three acts, Xerse made its debut at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice in 1655, enjoying enormous success, so much so that the libretto was later set to music by other composers as was the custom at the time. The historical subject, albeit fictionalized, begins to innovate the themes of the librettos hitherto anchored to mythology alone. The story narrated is that of Xerxes I, the son of Darius and Atossa who, born in 519 BC. (c.) reigned over Persia and the huge empire from 486 to 465 BC. The source is Herodotus whom Minato enriches in the plot and in the multitude of details in the libretto. Serse loves Romilda, future wife of his brother Arsamene, but he is loved by Amastre and hindered by Romilda’s sister Adelanta: in the end he will leave his brother and sister-in-law alone, marry the good Amastre and punish the other, intriguing woman. The work was also staged in Paris to celebrate the wedding of the Sun King, enlarged to five acts and interspersed with six dance entrées signed by Lully
