ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Revision of the original manuscript by Aaron Carpenè
new production by the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice
on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Alessandro Scarlatti’s death. The Triumph of Honor , or the Penitent Solitary—the only musical comedy among Alessandro Scarlatti’s thirty operas—recalls the myth of Don Giovanni in the character of the young dissolute Riccardo Albenori: a dissolute man who, however, eventually mends his ways. This opera—first performed in Naples at the Teatro dei Fiorentini on November 26, 1718, where it was enthusiastically received by Neapolitan audiences, increasingly interested in this repertoire—inaugurated a new model of comic opera, with a coherent dramatic and musical structure and characters speaking in Tuscan dialect, rather than, as was traditional, Neapolitan. The intricate interplay of four couples also allows Scarlatti to juggle a series of ensemble pieces, culminating in the superb concertato that closes the second act. With Il trionfo dell’onor Scarlatti opened paths that would later be explored by Giovan Battista Pergolesi and other greats of the Neapolitan school.
