George Frideric Handel composed the oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (HWV 46a) in 1707 while in Italy and performed it at the Collegio Clementino theater in Rome, possibly in May or June 1707. The libretto was by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj.
Plot
The sequence of events is less about a story told or the action of the four characters or allegories, and more about a question: should the young “beauty” give herself entirely to “pleasure” or should she early, admonished by “time” and “truth”. (literally: disappointment), reflect on their transience and true values? When the beauty swears allegiance to pleasure, she is nevertheless already aware of her transience and the power of time, which every glance in the “true mirror” reveals. Time and truth, therefore, have an easy time with their clues to the life cycle of people and the contents of their graves. Beauty soon rejects the delusions of pleasure, parting from sensual pleasures and converting to the true pleasure of insight into heavenly truths, where the tears of the just become pearls. She therefore decides to spend the rest of her life in a hermitage or monastery.
“If there is a triumph, it unfortunately does not belong to the libretto, which is infinitely musical, obviously coming from a heart that is enthusiastic about rhythm and melody, but repeats its theses ad nauseum and tends to stay on the surface.” [2] For time and truth do not justify with a single word why the joys of youth are opposed to the joys of faith, why it should be necessary to renounce the one in order to share in the other – but that was the violently enforced one that also influenced the history of the work church morals.
