ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In this production, the emblematic opera, inspired by the Indianist novel by José de Alencar, gains a new interpretation under the conception of Ailton Krenak and stage direction by Cibele Forjaz. The presence on stage of a choir formed by indigenous Guarani people from the state of São Paulo and the actress Zahy Tentehar add a new dimension to the production.
Guarani was the first Brazilian opera to achieve international recognition and one of the few to remain in the canonical repertoire. The plot explores the love story between Cecília, the daughter of a Portuguese nobleman, and the indigenous Peri, the backdrop for the attempt, typical of nationalist literature, to create a founding myth of the Brazilian nation, in which the process of colonization would occur through the loving encounter between the colonized and the colonizer. This encounter is punctuated by the antithesis between the “noble savage,” submissive to the religious and civilizing values of the colonizers, and the untamed savage, the uncompromising defender of his land.
