Opera by Carlos Gomes, with libretto by Antônio Scalvini, based on the novel by José de Alencar, Il Guarany was presented for the first time in Milan, in 1870. It is set in 16th century Rio de Janeiro, where Cecília, daughter of Portuguese nobleman D. Antonio de Mariz, falls in love with Peri, chief of the Guarani tribe. Gonzales, a Spanish adventurer, loves Cecília, but is not reciprocated. The Aimoré enemies imprison Peri and Cecília and will sacrifice them in honor of their god. The couple is saved by the Guarani, allies of the Portuguese. Wanting revenge, Gonzales invades D. Antonio’s castle, explodes the powder magazine and the castle goes up in the air, killing everyone, but Peri and Cecília are saved.
